Awards

The purpose and scope of awards given by the Santa Fe Trail Association are addressed in the Association's bylaws. The bylaws read: "The Association from time to time shall present various awards to persons or entities who have furthered the goals and purposes of the Association. The policies and the various award categories shall be approved by the Board. The Awards Committee shall be empowered to carry out the policies and procedures of the awards program."  As approved by the Board, all awards are given in conjunction with the biennial Santa Fe Trail Association Symposium, held in odd-numbered years.

David Clapsaddle Memorial Chapter Award

Who is Eligible

Chapters or individuals/groups who are members of Chapters

Number

One (1)

Criteria

Santa Fe Trail Association Chapters, or individuals or groups within a Chapter who have done outstanding work or provided outstanding leadership in a chapter (erecting signs, guiding tours, giving programs, etc.)

Paul Bentrup Ambassador Award

Who is Eligible

Individuals who are currently members in good standing of the Santa Fe Trail Association

One (1)

Criteria

Persons clearly identified with promotion of the Santa Fe Trail Association, development and dissemination of knowledge of Trail history, preservation of Trail related ruts, artifacts, or historical sites, or which otherwise promote the knowledge and understanding of the Santa Fe Trail in the history of the United States

Gregory Franzwa Memorial for Lifetime Achievement Award

Who is Eligible

Any Santa Fe Trail Association member

Jack D. Rittenhouse Memorial Stagecoach Award

Who is Eligible

Criteria

Extraordinary achievement and lifetime contributions to the Santa Fe Trail, including lifetime achievement in research and writing about the history of the Santa Fe Trail

Hathaway/Gaines Memorial Heritage Preservation Award

Who is Eligible

Landowners, former landowners, leaseholders, or tenants of Santa Fe Trail ruts, remnants, structures, or sites.  Nominees do not need to be members of the Santa Fe Trail Association

Criteria

Landowners, former landowners, leaseholders, or tenants who have preserved and protected significant portions of the Santa Fe Trail and provided for public access

Educator Award

Who is Eligible

Teachers or educators.  Nominees do not need to be members of the Santa Fe Trail Association

One (1)

Criteria

Outstanding teaching about the Santa Fe Trail in elementary, secondary or higher education.  Anyone may nominate a teacher or educator. The nomination must state what the nominee has done to deserve this award.   Membership in the Santa Fe Trail Association is not required

Marc Simmons Writing Award

Who is Eligible

Contributors to Wagon Tracks, or authors of a significant article or book about the Trail. Nominees do not need to be members of the Santa Fe Trail Association.

Number

Two(2) Awards may be given

Criteria

Best article in Wagon Tracks, or best original article or book about the history of the Santa Fe Trail based on research in primary sources for the review period.
Procedure: The Wagon Tracks Editors, and others as necessary, who have not contributed to any of the materials under consideration will judge the nominated articles, and/or books.

Nomination Procedure
Unless otherwise indicated above, any Santa Fe Trail Association member may make a nomination for an award.

Nominations for each award should consist of:

  • The name, address and contact information of the person, entity or organization being nominated
  • The name of the ward you are nominating for
  • A paragraph telling why the nominee should receive the award according to the criteria for each award as listed in the above award schedule.
  • A signed photo-release from to accompany any submitted photographs – form available at: Photo Release Form
  • Name, address, telephone number, and/or email address of the nominator
