Political clout often proved to be a valuable tool in the early days of the various emigrant and commercial trails, such as getting friendly state and national politicos to get a survey done, a military post established, or cranking up “Manifest Destiny” a couple of notches. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, they were a vital part of the process of making the Road to Santa Fe a National Historic Trail.
