Challenge Cost-Share (CCSP) is a program for funding joint projects that further the
National Historic Trail programs and the partner's programs. These are projects that the
National Park Service and a partner will undertake together. In most cases, there will be
significant involvement of the National Trails System – Santa Fe staff in the planning and
execution of the project. In some cases, such as an archeological investigation, we may
be involved primarily in developing and/or reviewing plans, with less active involvement
in the execution of the project.
The National Park Service and the Santa Fe Trail Association have a cooperative
agreement that lets the NPS provide the association funding for administrative assistance
and for projects. All cost share projects with the association or its chapters will use this
agreement. Funding for chapter projects must be passed through the national office, so
they can account for the funds in reporting related to the association's 501c3 status as a
non-profit organization.
Cost-share is one of the most frequently used tools in the SFTA’s funding strategy.
Enclosed in the Tool Box are three documents needed to apply for a cost-share. Applying
is not as complicated as lots of other government or private grant programs, but it does
require that the procedures be followed to assure smooth sailing.
To begin, read the “Cost Share Guidelines” document below, then download the sample budget
and application documents from their links. The application and budget will need to be
submitted as a paper documents upon completion.
